THE QUEERS - (1996) - Don't Back Down

The Queers are a punk band from US and the best way I can describe their sound on this CD is ''The Beach Boys meet Ramones'' and it's the formula which makes them a fun and good listening. The Queers have been active for more than 25 years since their first line-up was formed in 1982. They broke up after a few years, but then got together again sometime around 1989 and they've been active from then on, the only constant member of the band being their frontman Joe Queer. More detailed info about The Queers can be found on Wikipedia, their Official site, their MySpace page and there is a quite extensive discography that can be checked out here.

Stiff Little Fingers

What's there to say about S.L.F.? They are an excellent punk band from Belfast in Northern Ireland that formed back in 1977. They broke up in 1983, then got together again in 1987 and are still active to this day. I got interested in Stiff Little Fingers when I was in high school after borrowing a copy of their ''Inflammable Material'' LP on tape from a friend. I liked their songs and lyrics. After that I sort of forgot about them until a couple of years ago when Mario K. (AKA Frik) ''forced'' me to listen to them and they got under my skin again. Big thanx to him, cos for me this is one of the best bands from that early 1977-1981 period of punk. ''Nobody's Heroes'' is their second and ''Go For It'' their third album. Tracks 11-14 on ''Nobody's Heroes'' are bonus ones since I've ripped it from it's 2001 reissue. Check out more info about Stiff Little Fingers at their Official web site and on Wikipedia.

Snuff

Snuff is a punk band from UK that started playing in 1986. Their sound is somewhat melodic, but tight. I was introduced to them by late Domagoj Š. who put their ''Tweet Tweet My Lovely'' CD in his stereo on some party at his place. I was a bit wasted and could do nothing else but lie down and soak up their music and lyrics. I felt a connection with them, specially when the last song called ''Take Me Home (Piss Off)'' came on. Ahhh, the memories… I saw them once in Metelkova in Ljubljana, Slovenia and it was a good gig. ''Snuff Said…'' is Snuff's first album and is actually called something like ''Snuff said but gor blimey guv stone me if he didn't throw a wobbler cha cha cha cha cha cha cha cha cha cha cha youre going home in a cosmic ambience'' (I hope I've got it right) and ''Tweet Tweet My Lovely'' is I think their sixth. For more info check an article on Wikipedia about Snuff.

LA FRACTION - (2002) - Aussi Long Sera Le Chemin

La Fraction are a punk band from France, with excellent female vocals. This CD is their second album. They were formed in 1992 and are still active so I would recommend seeing them live if you get the chance. They played two gigs in Zagreb, one in Attack and one in 2006 in Močvara club, both times giving a good performance. They have a web page that you can check out here, and if you like them I think that this album and also the first one (self-titled) can be ordered from Crash Disques.

LTS (stands for Long Term Survivors) are a Celtic-folk/punk (or Celtic core as I've found it being described on some web sites) band from France. They sound pretty good, and they played once in Zagreb, but unfortunately I haven't been to that gig. I don't know much about this band, so I don't have any real info about them, I've found their web page which is in French and I think this CD may still be available on some distros.

KING TUBBY - (2000) - Crucial Dub

King Tubby (real name Osbourne Ruddock) was a legendary Jamaican sound engineer and producer. I don't know much about him, but I know that he was very respected and very popular particularly in the 1970's. I like his music, and this is a pretty good compilation of some of his stuff. King Tubby was sadly shot to death in front of his house in an apparent robbery attempt back in 1989. For more info there's an article about him on Wikipedia, and his discography, biography, pics, etc. can be found on Roots Archives.

LEE ''SCRATCH'' PERRY - (1997) - A Serious Dub

Lee ''Scratch'' Perry is a legendary performer and producer from Jamaica. He got involved in music in late 1950's, and was a leader of The Upsetters during 1968-1972 period. He created and operated The Black Ark studio during 1973-1978 when it burned down and after that Lee ''Scratch'' Perry went to UK and US to continue his music career. He is thought to be an inventor of dub music. He is quite a colorful character, and for anyone interested in his music I would recommend getting ''Arkology I-III'' compilation of his works from above mentioned The Black Ark studios. The CD I've put up in this post is an OK compilation of his dubs, but I have to be honest, there are millions of them out there… Check for more info about ''Scratch'' on Wikipedia, Lee ''Scratch'' Perry's MySpace page, and for most extensive discography go here.

Judge Dread

Judge Dread (or Alex Hughes, which was his real name) was a ska/reggae performer from the UK. He started playing around the beginning of the 1970's. His songs were funny although considered ''rude'' by some snobbish, stuck-up people. I can't agree with them, for me he just had a good sense of humor. I like his music a lot, and that's the main reason I've decided to upload it. I know that he's not well known as other ska/reggae artists like i.e. Desmond Dekker, but I hope this post will correct that. Judge Dread sadly died of a heart attack in 1998. I recommend that you go and read an article about Judge Dread on Wikipedia cos it gives much more details about him than I have given you here cos the man had an interesting life story worth checking out. Cheers to Judge Dread!!!

NO RESPECT - (1997) - Excuse My Smile

I was introduced to this German Oi!/punk/ska/reggae band by Sandro of Živjela Komercijala zine/distro. THE 4 SKINS - (1999) - The Best Of The 4 Skins

This legendary Oi!/punk band was formed back in 1979 and they broke up in 1984. It's a bit weird to write about them cos I liked them a lot when I started listening to them and you can't deny them giving the ''A.C.A.B.'' slogan to the world of angry cop hating youths (together with a couple of really great Oi!/punk songs), but then there were some really dodgy people in that band like their guitarist Paul Swain (from 1983-1984 period) who later played in those nazi scums Skrewdriver. And being connected with Garry Bushell (who looked like a pimp when I first saw him in that 1983 ''UK/DK'' movie that I've mentioned in some of my previous posts) doesn't give them many positive points in my book. However, this is a very good release and I hope you enjoy it! It looks like The 4 Skins got back together in 2007 cos I've found their MySpace page, and there's also an article about The 4 Skins on Wikipedia, and you can also check The 4 Skins fan page I've stumbled upon which has a lot of info like their pics, lyrics, bio, discography, etc.

TERMITI [1996] LP ploča ''Vjeran pas''

Termiti were one of the legendary punk/new wave bands from the city of Rijeka in Croatia. They were formed in the 1978 and played until 1982. Termiti never released an album but you can find three of their songs on a cult compilation LP called ''Novi punk val'' which was released back in 1980 by ZKP RTL (Radio Television Ljubljana's record label) and which covered the period of Ex-Yugoslavian punk and new wave from years 1978-1980. The Termiti CD I'm putting up here is from 1996 (but I've found info on the net that says it was released back in 1998, so I don't know for sure…) and I'm putting it up cos it's being reissued this week (with different covers) in celebration of 30 years anniversary of Termiti's formation. I think that this is actually a complete discography of their work. Termiti were a shock to the public when they first appeared cos they used unusual stage props like toilet seats, throwing feathers on audience, etc. Hope you'll like them, and if you do, try to get this reissue coming out this week, at least those of you from Croatia.

Tito's Bojs

Tito's Bojs are a relatively new punk rock band from Istra (Istrian Peninsula) in Croatia. They play music reminiscent of The Clash and some Latin American bands that carry on with that style of music with a touch of fun thrown in. ''Electro Istra'' is their second release and ''Picajolo'' their third and most recent. They are still active and are gigging around. I saw them live once in Gromka club in Metelkova in Ljubljana and it was a good gig. I like them cos they have a strong anti-fascist attitude, their ''Naci skinjara'' (Nazi skin) song being one of the best anti-nazi songs from a Croatian band that I have ever heard. And their name is also quite courageous to have in today's Croatia where the mention of Tito or communism can get your head kicked in by some idiot filled with patri(di)otism (read: right wing shits who adore war criminals from Croatian quisling regime during World War II). Check them out at their Tito's Bojs official site and order some of their stuff cos I think it's still available.

Fakofbolan (FOB)

Fakofbolan are a band from Pula (again!) who play great punk/Oi! kind of music. They were active during the years of 1993-2006 when they sadly disbanded. I've put up here two of their albums, ''Jedini dokaz'' and ''Provincija uzvraća udarac''. On ''Jedini dokaz'' tracks 01-14 are from that album and tracks 15-23 are bonus ones from FOB's split LP with Dark Busters, another band from Pula, which was released in 1996 (''Himna Tounju'' and Maske's joke about the rabbit which were on the original split LP are sadly not here). ''Provincija uzvraća udarac'' is FOB's last studio album, relased on now dead Zvuk Močvare label (killed by racketeering from ZAMP, Croatian version of RIAA, which only cares about killing off underground scene in my country and protecting the interests of mainstream entertainers, popularly called ''estrada'' but I like to call them ''slime'' or ''maggots'' instead, who churn out debilitating songs that'll give you a brain tumor if you get too much exposure to them). FOB was an intense band to watch, and had great lyrics that got you thinking. One of my favourite Croatian bands of all times. If you like them, there's their live show during 10th Orto Punk Festival in Metelkova in Ljubljana which was recorded on 13.09.2003. available for download from Monte Paradiso Netlabel. I've found FOB's web page that looks like it wasn't updated for a long time, but you should check it out cos there's more detailed info (biography, discography, pics, lyrics etc.) about FOB there than that what I've written here.

If you like them you can find their “-1 Mozak” EP on Monte Paradiso Netlabel, as well as stuff from the previous bands of Bolesno Grinje’s members. They also have a Bolesno Grinje MySpace page with more info about them so check it out. Excellent band with excellent people in it!

I bought this one from Vedran M. (Humanita Nova distro/label). Sawn Off are a band from UK that played during 1996-2001 period. They play fast, angry, short songs that will hit you in the head and guts like a ton of bricks. If that's not enough of a recommendation, then just look at this releases cover which is a nice picture of young Michael Caine from his ''Get Carter'' movie made in 1971. They have the Sawn Off MySpace page, and I've managed to find an Sawn Off interview that you can check out here. And for more info on this CD you can check Discogs.

P.A.I.N.

Thanx to introducing me to P.A.I.N. go to Tomislav V. (AKA Vrx) and Domagoj Š. (who sadly died in India in 2005). P.A.I.N. is an acronym for Propaganda And Information Network. This punk/reggae band was formed by members of Radical Dance Faction (Phil, Dan & Ozzy) and AOS3 (John) (hence my previous two posts). The best from those two bands got merged into P.A.I.N., for me personally one of the best bands I've ever heard. They're on Top 5 list of my favourite bands of all times! I saw them live at Močvara club in Zagreb in 2006 and it was one of the best gigs I've ever been to. The cover for ''Oh My God! We Are Doing It!'' was taken from a comic book called ''Breaking Free'' which is about Tin Tin being a revolutionary kid from a working class who gets involved in a strike, clashes with the police, and finally participates in a revolution! Good read if you can get it somehow. I didn't scan the covers of their ''Dub Ska Punk'' EP/MCD when I ripped it, sorry for that! If I've got you interested in P.A.I.N., and you like what you hear after downloading, you can find P.A.I.N.'s stuff and much info about them on Iron Man Records.

AOS3 [1993] Gods Secret Agent

AOS3 is a punk/ska/reggae/dub band from Sunderland which was formed in 1990. They released two albums, ''Gods Secret Agent'' on Words Of Warning and ''Diversionary Tactics'' in 1995 for Inna State Records. They broke up in 1994, but have reformed in 2007 and they are gigging around so check them out if they're playing near you. They have their AOS3 official web site that has all the info on the band you could possibly want and an AOS3 MySpace page.

Radical Dance Faction

R.D.F. started playing back in 1986. They came from Hungerford in UK. When they begun playing they were called Military Surplus and you can find one of their tracks on the ''Stonehenge'' EP released by Bluurg Records and also reissued on ''Bluurg Records EP's 82-88'' (by the way, an excellent release, get it if you can!). R.D.F. are a great band that got me into punk/dub sort of music, they have a dark, almost suicidally depressive atmosphere but there's always a feeling of hope, of the light at the end of a tunnel feeling to it. Don't know, maybe all this sounds too poetic, I always have a problem in describing music I like and slotting it into certain genre. Since their split, various members have played in bands such as the Revolutionary Dub Warriors, P.A.I.N., DF118, The Wonder Stuff, The Rhythmites, and Dub The Earth. ''Borderline Cases'' is their first CD release (they had two tape releases before that), ''Wasteland'' is the second, with a cover done by Gee Vaucher who designed covers for Crass and I added the poster Gee did and which was planned to be used for future R.D.F.'s album covers, the ''Wasteland'' being part one of, I think, three. Unfortunately they never came out cos the band split up. ''Raggamuffin Statement'' is a compilation of R.D.F.'s stuff from different compilations etc. You can learn more about them from an article on Wikipedia about R.D.F. and a R.D.F.’s MySpace fan page.
