HOĆU? NEĆU! - (2002) - No Border Jam 2002

Hoću? Neću! (roughly translated in English their name means something like "Will I? I Won't!" or maybe "Do I Want It? I Don't!") were a very influential band on Ex-Yugoslavian punk/hc scene during the 1990's. They come from town of Kraljevo in Srbija (Serbia) and play angry political hardcore-punk with really smart lyrics that criticize the nationalist elites and stupidity of war in Ex-YU. I don't know what they're doing now, but I think they still exist since I've found their MySpace page. On this recording you can't feel their full force and energy cos it was recorded in just one day in the studio so it sounds more like a live recording. I'll try to dig up their old tapes I've got, especially "Srpski san" and "Trulež" and upload them if I figure out how to transfer music from cassettes to my PC (any suggestions or info would be helpful - just leave a comment under "komentari"). Untill that happens, and you want more of their music, try googling for them, I'm pretty sure someone from Ex-YU has already posted their stuff on his/hers blog or forum.Info stuff: MySpace.
UPDATE ON 11.08.2012. : Some people have been asking for other Hoću? Neću! releases. I got few on tape, but in very poor quality as I don't have the original tapes, but a copy which is a copy of a copy of a friends' friends tape. That's how most stuff got spread around during the 1990's here in Balkans/Ex-YU. I did manage to find a last.fm page with most of their stuff (or that maybe is their full discography?) with free downloads of all the songs. Stuff online has been released under Uradi Sam label, and the link is here --> Hoću? Neću! discography.

LEVELLERS - (2002) - Green Blade Rising

Levellers are well known folk-punk band originally from Brighton, UK. They started playing back in 1988 and are active to this day. "Green Blade Rising" is their 15th album (including "the best of's" & "singles collections" according to their official site) and I have to say that, if you ask me, it's not as good as their early albums. But then, I also have to admit that Levellers were never my favourite band in the first place. I like their politics but their music is missing something, some kick in it, some energy or provocation. Obviously, there's nothing smart or informative that I can say about them so I would like to point you to the links below if you want to know more.

PETROGRAD [2002] Nineoneone

Petrograd is a band from Luxembourg and they were formed in October of 1996 by former member of bands like Subway Arts, No More and Bakunin's Children. They play this mix of emo/melodic/pop/punk/hc with both very personal and very political lyrics. This is their third album and I think it's the last stuff that they've released cos I couldn't find anything about them on the net (although, with a name like Petrograd I'm not surprised at that - ever tried typing Disorder into Google?).

UB40 - (1982) - Live

I've posted this CD cos I think it's great. The sound UB40 have on this live recording from 1982 isn't your usual UB40 sound that your mother likes (you know, those sugary love ballads, sort of songs you can hear on the radio). Here they sound great and the songs deal with more political topics. It was interesting for me to find out that their name comes from an unemployment benefit claim form (UB40 = Unemployment Benefit, Form 40) since I always viewed them as just an ordinary mainstream reggae band whose music was only good for playing on hotel terraces to 40+ year old tourists. Once more, my thanx go to Vedran M. (Humanita Nova, RDK, etc.) for breaking that illusion and introducing me to this UB40 release.

MANO NEGRA - (1988) - Patchanka

Another legendary band on Nečista Savjest. Mano Negra (or Black Hand) were a band from France that mixed all kinds of music styles like ska, rock, punk, reggae, latino, etc.. They existed during 1987-1995 period and were fronted by Manu Chao (today he's well known as solo artist). "Patchanka" is Mano Negra's first album and I have to say that I have listened to this band a lot when I first discovered them (sometime in late 1990's) cos their music was sooo infectious. Thanx for this CD go to Ivo B. who gave it to me as a birthday present.Info stuff: MySpace, Wikipedia, Manu Chao (has a section about Mano Negra).

ARGIES - (2003) - Fake Reaction

Argies are a punk rock band from city of Rosario in Argentina and they have that sound that many Latin American bands have, reminiscent of The Clash with something uniquely theirs thrown in. They were formed in mid 1990's (at least I think so cos their first album was released in 1996). If I remember correctly I first heard this band from Vedran M. (Humanita Nova) almost ten years ago. I bought this CD ("Fake Reaction" is by the way Argies' sixth album) in 2006 at Argies gig in KSET club in Zagreb and I have to admit that they sound much better live than on their CDs. Still, they're a pretty good punk rock band and I like their attitude & music.Info stuff: Official site (biography, discography, pics, some mp3's), MySpace.

Choking Victim & Leföver Crack

I bought this two CDs at Leftöver Crack's gig in Attack club (RIP) in Zagreb. Leftöver Crack was formed out of the ashes of Choking Victim so I've decided to post this two bands together.

Choking Victim are punk/ska/hc band from New York's Lower East Side neighborhood and they were active during the 1990's. "No Gods No Managers" is their only album, and I like it a lot! I first heard them on Hellcat Records' compilation "Give 'Em The Boot" and got interested in them. Then Leftöver Crack played a gig in my hometown and I got this CD from their distro. Now, it's here for our enjoyment. Hope you like it!Info stuff: Crack Rock Steady, Wikipedia.

As I've written earlier, Leftöver Crack was formed in 2000 after the breakup of Choking Victim. "Mediocre Generica" is their first album and it was released on Hellcat Records. Their sound is similar to Choking Victim and it's a mix of punk, hc, reggae, ska... Leftöver Crack are still active and nowadays they are signed to both Fat Wreck Chords and Alternative Tentacles. They are a very energetic band and if you haven't heard their music I would recommend you download this band and Choking Victim too.Info stuff: Official Site, MySpace, Crack Rock Steady, Wikipedia.

BAD RELIGION - (1982) - How Could Hell Be Any Worse?

Don't know what to say about Bad Religion. I like them a lot, at least this release and couple of others, but then, I don't like the stuff they have been doing for last decade or so cos it's just boring, when I listen to that it looks to me like they've found out a formula and they're sticking to it and are just not being inventive anymore. "How Could Hell..." is in my opinion the best Bad Religion album (with "Against The Grain" and "Suffer" maybe) and it's a quite nice reissue cos you get all these bonus tracks from their EPs. As usual with "big" bands like Bad Religion I feel stupid to just copy the info about them from various sites, so head to "Info stuff" links below for all you've ever wanted to know about this band.Info stuff: Official site, MySpace, Wikipedia.

DEBELI PRECJEDNIK - (2003) - Fist From East

Debeli Precjednik (or Fat Prezident as they're called in English) are a melodic punk/hc band with a sound reminiscent to bands like Millencolin. They come from the city of Osijek which is in eastern part of Croatia. They've been around for some time, cos they started playing back in the 1993. "Fist From East" is their second album. Debeli Precjednik are still active and you can get their third and latest album called "Through The Eyes Of The Innocent" from Moonlee Records.

Two 7" compilations

This two 7" compilations come on this blog courtesy of Malisha of Röckin' Nöiz blog. I have to admit that I had a bit of autocensorship trip when I was deciding to place a Gay Pride 7'' cover on my blog or not, but now somehow I figured it out and I feel that putting pictures of sex is less harmful than putting pictures of dead people on my blog. I then started to realize that all this so called Western Civilization is so hung up on dead people. The more dead they are, the more they enjoy them. Those fucking cannibals! And all those punk/hc covers, it's all the same, dead, genocide, pits filled with putrid bodies, it's like all those bands get off on all that death, they are also a bunch of fucking cannibals. Western Europe, take notice or you're gonna burn!!!

Full name of this compilation is "Last Christmas I Gave You My Heart (But The Very Next Day You Took It To Record And Tape Exchange)". It's a nice compilation, maybe I should have it put up at Christmas time, but since all that catholic shit don't move me (I'm an atheist) I think it fits here just right. There is NO god (and if you think about it, GOD spelled backwards is DOG! - thanx to the Spithead band I can give you this revelation)! God sucks, anyway you call it, God, Allah, Buddha, etc. Religion is an organization that controls people with the help of sex guilt and sheep behavior. It's crap, don't go to church, or mosque, or any temple of worship cos they want your soul. Karl Marx was right, religion IS the opium for the people! Have some heroin, it's better than god. Fuck the church, they make people get cancer and commit suicide! Religion is bad for you! You can see that I have a pretty strong feelings about religion and churches, and I'm sorry if I have offended anyone, but it's your fault if you are a dumb fucking asshole of a believer!

Gay Pride is an excellent compilation, bands are mostly melodic (except Doom) and they get the message across both in serious and in funny way. I personally like Chumbawamba song the best cos it's simple and straightforward. It goes something like: "What's the ugliest part of your body? / Some say your toes / Some say your nose / But I think it's your mind / Your mind / Your mind...". Can't beat that! Gay rights are violently debated in today's Croatia, last Gay Pride march was almost bombed with molotov cocktails, and the previous ones were also held under tight police supervision. Police wasn't there cos it was worried about gays & lesbians but cos it was worried about the primitives trying to disrupt the march. I have some gay & lesbian friends and I don't understand why ordinary people in Croatia hate them, cos I've found out that those gay & lesbian (hello to Anchi!) friends of mine are really cool people. When I get drunk the gay boys are not trying to rape me when I'm unconscious from alcohol intake (although straight people try to rob me when I'm in this state by picking through my pockets and wallet) and lesbian girls are so much fun to talk to than the ordinary girls (who are worried about the marriage and stuff like that). Download and have fun!
